Beware Of Calls From "Spoofed" Numbers

Remember 867 5309? Earlier this year, Delaware residents poured onto CallerComplaints.com reporting harassment and unsolicited calls from this number. The spoofed number turned out to be a mortgage company, using this lame tactic for over a month through March and April

There are several legitimate reasons why a company or individual might use a spoofed number, but for the most part spoofed numbers are used to disguise scams and prank calls. Caller Complaints users have already filed hundreds of complaints against spoofed numbers. The number 000-000-0000 is one of the most commonly reported, with over 5,000 FTC complaints.

CallerComplaints.com helps users by automatically identifying spoofed numbers. We do this by verifying the first six digits (area code + prefix) of every number searched on our site. If the combination is invalid, we let you know.

Here's how it works - if you search for a generic number like 555-555-5555, CallerComplaints.com will alert you with this message:

If you receive a call from a spoofed number DO NOT reveal any personally identifiable information. Of course, there is always the possibility that you won't realize that you were scammed until it's too late...Therefore, don't just rely on caller ID. Always, always, always verify the identity of any caller asking you to disclose sensitive information over the phone.

i am aware of spoofed calls. but there are some
cases where a caller is calling from an outgoing
VOIP service such as gizmo. Those do not have
real phone numbers since they are outgoing only. my point is some calls like this can be legit.

just passing along good info...

I have just recently started to get a call from a number that shows up as 000-000-0000; I do not answer those types of phone numbers to begin with. Plus I also get a call from where the number does not show up at all on my caller ID; do not answer that one either. I use to work as a telemarketer and I know what the guidelines use to be. 1.) You do not call after 9PM at all
2.) No calling on Sundays
3.) No calling after 1pm on Saturdays
4.) If no answer then they use to give a day's time about calling back at another time or another day down the road. If they refuse; and wish for their phone no. to be removed from the calling list then it was done.

Clearly I did not like telemarketers either but it was a job at that time but I left and never bothered to something like that ever again.
