Canadian Do Not Call List Disappoints

The Canadian Do Not Call List (DNCL) that was launched in September 2008 received major criticism this week. Global News reported that many Canadians registered with the DNCL have begun to receive more telemarketing calls than ever before!

One article explained that "thousands of Canadians tell us that signing up for the list has left their phones ringing off the hook. Home phones and for the first time, cell phones, are being bombarded with sales pitches."

Global News and other news sources have speculated that this is because the list, which contains 6 million active phone numbers, has gotten into the wrong hands. Apparently accessing the Canadian DNCL is as easy as registering on the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission) website as a telemarketer, and paying a small service fee. This is alarming because the list may be easily abused by international telemarketing agencies that are not bound by Canadian law.

The CRTC maintains that they will take action against those misusing the DNCL, though the media has been critical of their back-seat approach thus far.

For their part, the CRTC has explained that the increase in telemarketing calls may be for a variety of reasons, and cannot be blamed on the DNCL exclusively. Though this may be true, the disappointment of six million Canadians is still clearly palpable.

The Canadian DNCL should have been a positive step towards eliminating telemarketing calls, instead it's brought more discontent and it remains to be seen whether the damage is irreparable.

Typical of any government action... put on a good show, which is likely a lot of false information, then do nothing to help the average person. Bureaucrats line their own pockets, receive far too much in salaries, then collect too much in pensions, all for doing little to actually help people.

I am a subscriber of the DNCL and have noticed that telemarketing calls are now being made to us in Vietnamese for long distance calling to Vietnam. In addition, I have begun to receive telemarketing calls on my mobile.

The Canadian DNC Lists are simply a fraudulent government program organized by a Do-not-tell registry of a few government bureaucrats that sell out Canadians and United States Citizens that have gotten illegal calls and have registered them. The government bureaucrats probably make considerable payoffs for their betrayals of all those on their respective registries. Everybody getting these illegal calls must pursue legal remedies immediately in order to have something done about these lawbreakers. They have a bit of protection and we must break through that protection to bring them to justice.
